★★★★ "...an enthralling, brutal, darkly funny and oddly hypnotic tale from this muddy patch of period England" - Time Out

★★★★ "Peake is terrific throughout, and the dreamlike mood lingers after the credits roll, a story made to chew on, told amid the mists of an England briefly up for grabs." - Financial Times

★★★★ "...all aspects of Thomas Clay's gritty, immersive historical drama blaze with visceral authenticity." - Empire

"
The lead performance by Peake holds it together: fierce, strong, intelligent - a convincing depiction of someone who will learn from what she will survive." - The Guardian

Fanny Lye (Maxine Peake) lives a quiet Puritan life with her husband John (Charles Dance) and young son Arthur (Zak Adams), but her simple world is shaken to its core by the arrival of a mysterious young couple (Freddie Fox and Tanya Reynolds) in need.
